OBJECTIVES: Review causes of subcutaneous emphysema in the dental setting Evaluate trends in treatment of subcutaneous emphysema from 2009-2015, especially regarding antibiotics for this condition METHODS: We used the PubMed and web of science databases to research dental/OMFS causes of subcutaneous emphysema and their treatment. Excluded non-dental related causes of subcutaneous emphysema RESULTS: (If applicable) 150 of the 200 cases were linked to the use of air-driven handpieces. Approximately 150 of the 200 IV antibiotics were utilized. 95% of cases where IV antibiotics were utilized had no progression of disease process. Other cases involved a CO2 laser or a NO2 cryomachine. Of the cases reviewed, 5 resulted in significant complications after subcutaneous emphysema including spread to the mediastinum. CONCLUSIONS: Antibiotics are an effective treatment for subcutaneous emphysema. IMPLICATIONS: Knowing how to recognize and treat subcutaneous emphysema is a valuable skill to have as a dental provider.Preventing subcutaneous emphysema is the first step.
