OBJECTIVES: This aim of this research is to assess the effectiveness of aloe gel as a cost-effective adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) in reducing periodontal pockets. METHODS: The PICO question was, In patients with Chronic Periodontitis, is the use of aloe gel as an adjunct more effective at reducing periodontal pockets than the use of SRP alone. The inclusion criteria for the selected articles were peer reviewed articles written within the years of 2019-2024. The search engines were Pubmed, and Science Direct. The keywords were Aloe vera, therapeutics, periodontitis, and natural. RESULTS: (If applicable) Publications that met the inclusion criteria consisted of 4 articles. For this literature review, we used 3 studies, all of which were randomized control studies. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence supports numerous instances where aloe vera gel offers greater benefits than scaling and root planning alone (SRP). All three studies proved that aloe vera gel improves periodontal health by reducing gingival index, bleeding, CFU counts, and probing pocket depth (PPD). IMPLICATIONS: Based on the data observed, using aloe can help in the healing process of chronic periodontitis and offer homeopathic option for patients.
