Abstract

Background: Burn is a major cause of death and disability at the worldwide level. The prevalence of burn disability is increasing and disproportionately higher in low- and middle-income countries. Objective: To examine whether workplace environment (home or workplace) is associated with the occurrence of burn disability in India. Methods: This study has used the unit records from the National Sample Survey (NSS) 76th Round (2018), Schedule 26.0. Persons with Disabilities: Burn disability is identified from the schedule's cause of disability code; for burn/injury, the schedule records place of occurrence (home, workplace, road, other). Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, multivariable, and probit models were used to examine the workplace environment and socioeconomic status of persons with burn disabilities in India. Results: Results reveal that burn disability is associated with workplace environment and gender in India. Rural areas have a higher prevalence of burn disability compared to urban areas. People having lower education and belonging to the poorest wealth quintile have the higher risk of burn disability. Conclusions: The occurrence of burn disability is significantly impacting individuals and households, and it is associated with the workplace environment, particularly in rural areas and with gender in India. Setting matters for prevention, reflecting gender exposures and resource constraints. Policy implications: (1) Target home safety and clean cooking in rural households; (2) adopt basic burn prevention and first aid in the informal sector and high-risk occupations.
