Transitioning to practice as a newly registered nurse practitioner is experienced as a time of rapid personal and professional growth, with experiences ranging from burnout and overwhelm to excitement and immense satisfaction. This paper reports on the implementation and evaluation of a pilot nurse practitioner transition programme to inform the future design and delivery of Health New Zealand funded support from 2026. The pilot programme intended to promote successful integration into practice enabling nurse practitioners to work to their full scope of practice and deliver equity-based holistic care. Funded by Health New Zealand, the programme was delivered in 2023 and 2024 for 75 newly registered nurse practitioners working in primary healthcare and community settings and designed from international evidence and from our local knowledge and research. The programme included three key elements: 1) funding to the organisation to contribute to salary to facilitate transition to the new role; 2) five online workshops; and 3) an online mental health and addiction short course. Evaluation data were collected through surveys (between 40 and 55 respondents per item) and 258 free text comments. There was overwhelming support for the programme and its delivery. Funding was considered essential by 80% of respondents to support their successful transition. Recommendations include a funded one year programme to support orientation, longer appointments, access to clinical and peer support, and professional development; nurse practitioner specific courses; and the development of a toolkit to support nurse practitioners and their employing organisations.
